Essential apps for

Serbia

Србија

SerbianRSD8 apps

Serbia keeps the dinar (RSD) and cash is still king outside Belgrade and Novi Sad, though cards and contactless are widely accepted in cities. Uber and Bolt ride-hailing do not operate here — the home-grown CarGo app and Yandex Go cover Belgrade, while elsewhere you call licensed taxis. Glovo handles food delivery and Viber is the messaging app locals actually use; mobile data is cheap and fast, so an eSIM is worth it.

What to know before you go

Do

  • A firm handshake with eye contact is the standard greeting; toast by clinking glasses and making eye contact.
  • Accept offered coffee or rakija — hospitality is taken seriously and refusing can seem cold.

Don't

  • Bringing up the 1990s wars, Kosovo, or NATO bombing unless a local raises it first.
  • Confusing Serbian with Croatian or assuming the regions are interchangeable.

⚠️ Common scams to know

  • Unlicensed 'wild' taxis at Belgrade airport and Trg Republike charging inflated flat fares — book via app or use the official airport taxi desk.
  • Card machines or ATMs offering conversion to your home currency — always pay in dinar (RSD).
