What to know before you go

Do

  • Greet with a handshake and use 'Dobar dan' (good day) when entering shops or restaurants
  • Dress modestly when visiting churches and cover shoulders and knees
  • Make eye contact and say 'Živjeli' when toasting with drinks
  • Accept offered food or drink when visiting a home, as hospitality is a point of pride
  • Be respectful and avoid casual jokes about the 1990s war and its history
  • Remove your shoes when entering someone's home if asked

Don't

  • Avoid bringing up or trivializing the Croatian War of Independence (Homeland War) and ethnic tensions
  • Do not refer to Croatia as a 'Balkan' or formerly 'Yugoslav' country in a way that lumps it with neighbors, as many find it sensitive
  • Avoid wearing swimwear away from the beach in town centers and restaurants
  • Do not be loud or disruptive late at night in residential and historic old-town areas

⚠️ Common scams to know

  • Restaurants and bars in coastal tourist hotspots (Dubrovnik, Split, Hvar) charging unlisted prices or adding items to the bill; always check the menu and your receipt
  • Unlicensed private accommodation ('sobe') touts at ferry terminals and bus stations offering rooms that differ from what is promised
  • Taxi drivers without meters quoting inflated fixed fares; agree on a price first or use a ride app
  • Overpriced excursions and boat tours sold aggressively on the street with hidden extra costs
