  • Shower thoroughly without a swimsuit before entering public pools and hot springs; it's a strict hygiene rule.
  • Respect nature: stay on marked paths, never off-road drive, and leave no trace.
  • Address people by their first name; Icelanders use patronymics, not family surnames.
  • Be honest and direct; Icelanders are informal and value straightforwardness over formality.
  • Keep noise down and respect quiet, especially in small communities and at natural sites.

  • Don't drive off-road anywhere; it's illegal and severely damages fragile terrain.
  • Don't skip the pre-swim naked shower at pools and lagoons.
  • Don't stack rocks (cairns) or disturb moss, which can take decades to regrow.
  • Don't make jokes about elves or Iceland's small size in a mocking way; humor is fine but condescension isn't.

⚠️ Common scams to know

  • Inflated tourist-trap restaurant or bar prices; check menus and avoid spots that don't post prices.
  • Overpriced or unmetered private 'tours' and transfers; book through reputable, licensed operators.
  • Rental-car damage disputes over minor scratches or sandstorm/gravel damage; photograph the car thoroughly at pickup and consider gravel/sand insurance.
  • Fuel-pump or card pre-authorization confusion at unmanned gas stations; use a card with a PIN and verify final charges.
