What to know before you go

- Greet people with palms pressed together and 'Namaste'
- Remove your shoes before entering temples and homes
- Use your right hand for eating, giving, and receiving; the left is considered unclean
- Walk clockwise around stupas and Buddhist monuments such as Boudhanath
- Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees at religious sites
- Ask before photographing people, ceremonies, or inside temples

- Do not touch anyone's head or point at people or sacred objects with your feet
- Avoid touching or stepping over food, offerings, or another person's body
- Non-Hindus are often not allowed inside certain temple sanctums; respect the restriction
- Do not point the soles of your feet toward people or shrines while sitting

- Fake or unlicensed trekking guides and agencies; book through registered operators
- Inflated taxi fares and drivers refusing the meter, especially from the airport
- 'Holy men' (sadhus) at temples who place a tika or pose for photos then demand money
- Overcharging or fake gemstones and 'antiques' sold to tourists in Thamel and tourist markets
