What to know before you go

Do

  • Greet people with palms pressed together and 'Namaste'
  • Remove your shoes before entering temples and homes
  • Use your right hand for eating, giving, and receiving; the left is considered unclean
  • Walk clockwise around stupas and Buddhist monuments such as Boudhanath
  • Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees at religious sites
  • Ask before photographing people, ceremonies, or inside temples

Don't

  • Do not touch anyone's head or point at people or sacred objects with your feet
  • Avoid touching or stepping over food, offerings, or another person's body
  • Non-Hindus are often not allowed inside certain temple sanctums; respect the restriction
  • Do not point the soles of your feet toward people or shrines while sitting

⚠️ Common scams to know

  • Fake or unlicensed trekking guides and agencies; book through registered operators
  • Inflated taxi fares and drivers refusing the meter, especially from the airport
  • 'Holy men' (sadhus) at temples who place a tika or pose for photos then demand money
  • Overcharging or fake gemstones and 'antiques' sold to tourists in Thamel and tourist markets
