Tipping
Tipping is not traditionally expected but is increasingly appreciated in tourist areas; leaving around 5-10% or rounding up at restaurants is welcomed. Tipping tuk-tuk drivers and tour guides a small amount is common and meaningful given local wages.

Briefing
What to know before you go
โ Do
- Greet people with the 'sampeah', placing your palms together at chest level with a slight bow; the higher the hands, the more respect shown.
- Dress modestly at temples by covering shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes and hat before entering.
- Use your right hand or both hands to give and receive items, money, and food.
- Avoid touching anyone on the head, including children, as the head is considered the most sacred part of the body.
- Show deep respect toward monks; women should never touch a monk or hand objects directly to one.
- Keep your composure and smile rather than raising your voice, as public anger causes loss of face.
โDon't
- Do not point your feet at people, Buddha images, or altars, and don't point at people with a single finger.
- Never touch or pat someone on the head, even affectionately.
- Avoid public displays of affection and disrespecting images of the King or Buddha.
- Do not climb on or touch ancient temple carvings, and don't take Buddha statues or artifacts out of the country.
โ ๏ธ Common scams to know
- Tuk-tuk and taxi drivers may quote inflated fares or claim a site is closed to steer you to shops that pay them commission, so agree on a price first.
- At Angkor Wat, touts and children sell counterfeit guidebooks or beg, and some 'guides' offer unofficial paid tours.
- Fake or unofficial visa websites overcharge for the e-visa, so use only the official government portal.
- Beggars renting babies or pushing milk-powder 'donations' run a scam where the shop refunds the seller after you leave.
